We started off today moving into our last unit before we start reviewing for the EOGs. For the next couple of weeks we will be working on ENERGY and learning about alternative energy resources. We started by reading about renewable and nonrenewable resources and answering some text based questions (see below for a copy of today's assignment).
Reminder: your vocab is due on Monday. Make sure you are getting that done and you are studying those words for the quiz. Today's Assignment Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources Reading Assignment Well everyone, we are finally finishing up with the Earth Systems Unit. There are just a few groups that need to finish their project we started last week then we can watch the final project (hopefully I get my projector back from being fixed soon!!).
Today students took their 7th benchmark test of the year to finish out the unit. Tomorrow we will be starting our last unit on Energy so stay tuned for more info on that. VOCAB DUE MONDAY (5/4/15) energy solar energy wind energy wind turbine hydroelectric geothermal biomass nuclear energy ethanol New Bern is getting a new Mayor....well at least for the sake of our project anyways. Today, students were placed into groups of 3 or 4 and were given the task of being campaign managers for different candidates running for Mayor of New Bern. They are tasked with creating a 30 second commercial endorsing their candidate and explaining why the Clean Water Act should or should not be enforced. Students will have the rest of the week to work on this in class. Students will present their commercials to the class on Monday and continue on Tuesday after the benchmark test if necessary.

Today, students were required to read a text about point-source and non-point-source pollution. There were 6 questions at the end of the article they were required to answer that included items such as summarizing, citing text, and creating Venn Diagrams. They were required to read 4 chapters and take notes on each chapter then answer the questions at the end of each chapter. Today we are working on finishing up the water quality stations we started on Wednesday. Don't forget to get your vocab done by Monday and study those words for the quiz.

We kicked off class today watching a video called Jay-Z Water for Life which is about rapper Jay-Z's travels to Africa and his help with the global water crisis. We then moved into our stations activities (see below for links to these documents). Water Quality PowerPoint Water Quality Student Note Sheet Welcome back everyone! I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and restful Spring Break. I know it is always hard to get back into the swing of things, but alas we must. It is all down hill from here as we begin to prepare for the upcoming EOGs! Today we jumped right in to our 3rd section of the Earth Systems Unit (8.E.1.3). Students had to find information on water quality and the properties of water quality. In order to supplement students' knowledge of oceans, today we started a station activity where students traveled to 8 different stations reading and exploring different interactives. The stations included information about:
1. Deep Ocean Exploration 2. Marine Life Forms 3. Ocean/Marine Food Webs 4. Oceans as a Living Resource 5-8. Zones of the Ocean We will continue these stations tomorrow and then we will be off for SPRING BREAK!! You can find links to all the materials for today and tomorrow's activity below. This part of the unit explores the oceans, marine ecosystems, and estuaries. We used this POWERPOINT to take notes on this GRAPHIC ORGANIZER. Students glued these notes into their notebooks so they can study them at home.
Remember to stay ahead of your new vocab words. If you get them done this week you won't have anything to do over the break for science class! Take a look at the diagrams below to learn more about what today's lesson was on. Today in class students received their new set of vocab words (see below). These words will be due on the Monday we come back from Spring Break so make sure you are getting those words done and studying them! We also began working on a couple different reading assignments. The first assignment was on ESTUARIES. Students were required to read and answer the questions at the end of the reading. The second assignment was all about OCEAN ZONES AND MARINE FOOD WEBS. This assignment required students to read and then create 5 of their own questions based on the text. There is a possibility I will use some of these questions on their test at the end of this unit. This picture will also help students understand the ocean zones better. They should know details about the shore, the open ocean, and the deep ocean. They traveled to different stations doing activities that involved a different property of water. You can find a copy of the student lab book HERE (you will need Microsoft Publisher to open). Next week we will move on in the unit and begin talking about oceans!

Today, students took these NOTES (click to download student notes for notebooks) on the distribution of water. We used this PREZI to take notes from that has some great videos built in that gave us a closer look at the hydrosphere right here in North Carolina! I think students began to have that "eye opening" experience when it came to our water resources and how they need to be protected.
Tomorrow we will be working on a lab about water properties. Have a great evening!! Today students worked on putting together their own "notes study guide". This resource will be a great way to study for the benchmark and EOG for this unit. You can find the passages used HERE.
The following worksheets were used to go along with the passage: Water on Earth Surface Water Wetland Environments Water Underground Students were expected to complete the assignment using the passage and turn it in for a grade. It will be returned at a later date and put into their notebooks to be used to study. Today, students were introduced to the Hydrosphere unit with a Discovery Streaming video called "The Endless Voyage: It's in the Water". Students were required to take down notes as they listened to the video. We also completed a literacy assignment called Watersheds, Aquifers, & Groundwater. Students were required to answer the 7 questions after the reading in COMPLETE sentences on the same page as the notes from the video.
We also received the new set of vocab words (see below for the list). These words will be due on Monday the 30th. Be sure to study because there will be a quiz on these words on the 30th as well!!! I have been so busy I haven't been able to update lately. So let me get you caught up. Monday and Tuesday students had a substitute and they worked on their literacy skills by reading different articles about the current unit and answering questions about their reading as well as writing a summary for each article. Students were also given a new set of vocab words that are due on Monday (see below for these words). Wednesday, we watched the Planet Earth: Jungles video and students had to answer THESE questions (adapted from United Streaming) about the video. This video shows fabulous examples of a real ecosystem and the symbiotic relationships that take place within it as well as competition, coexistence, limiting factors and carrying capacity.
Thursday, we went over the STUDY GUIDE for the benchmark and classroom test. Students were able to ask any questions they had and clear up any misconceptions. Friday, students completed the 6th district benchmark assessment on Ecosystems and Monday they will be completing the classroom test for this unit as well. Keep in mind your vocab is due on Monday. Also, THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN ANY MISSING OR MAKE-UP WORK FOR THIS QUARTER IS MONDAY THE 23rd!!! Have a wonderful weekend, I will see you all Monday. Today, students were able to complete another online assignment using the interactive tool SAS CURRICULUM LESSON #952. This tool walked them through all the aspects of the Carbon Cycle. Students were also given the opportunity to finish the WebQuest from yesterday. Tomorrow students will complete a PACKET on Food Chains and Webs that will give them a better understanding of the flow of energy throughout ecosystems. Happy Hump Day! We are half way through the week and today we focused on the Carbon Cycle and Nitrogen Cycle with a webquest. Students had to complete THIS assignment while diving deep into the content from the 3 websites below. Tomorrow we will continue to look at these cycles as we complete a SAS Curriculum module online.

Today, students took NOTES (slides 36-42) on our last section of the Ecosystem Unit. We focused on the Carbon Cycle, Nitrogen Cycle, and Water Cycle. We also glued in diagrams for each cycle into our notebooks and color coded them to help us study.

We also worked on several different interactive websites today so students could gain a better understanding of how energy flows in ecosystems. The websites we visited are also below. We will finish our last set of notes on Ecosystems tomorrow and spend the rest of the week exploring the cycling of matter.
Hey there everyone! An update from yesterday and today's activities in Science. Yesterday, we kicked off our Ecosystem unit with our first set of notes. These notes covered the organization of ecosystems, limiting factors, and carrying capacity. I thought I left the northern weather behind when I moved here but apparently it has followed me! With these last 2 days off we have fallen a bit behind in the schedule. Today students completed STATIONS (station 4 VOCAB MATCH goes with these stations as well) about healthy living and completed the PACKET to go with it. Students also turned in their vocab words that were due. Tomorrow, students will be required to have their study guide ready to go over. We will be taking the benchmark assessment TOMORROW after we go over the study guide and the classroom test will be taken on Tuesday. Make sure you are studying for these assessments!!
