Students also received their last set of vocab for the Molecular Biology unit (see below for the words). These will be due Friday and we will take a quiz Friday on these words. Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope everyone has been staying dry the last few days! This rainy weather is making me so sleepy these days! Fortunately, we have lots of science work to keep us busy!
Yesterday we started right in on our new unit on Molecular Biology. Students were shown a POWERPOINT PRESENTATION on human health and they had a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER to fill out and take notes on during the presentation. New vocab words were given out (see below). These are due Friday, October 2nd. Be sure to study for the quiz too! Today we worked on a literacy assignment. Students read an ARTICLE ON HEALTHY LIVING and had several questions to answer at the end. Some of these questions required them to recall what they read and some of the required them to analyze and synthesize their reading. If this assignment was not finished before the end of class then it was assigned as homework and is due tomorrow. This topic always tends to be one of the more interesting topic for students. They really seem to get into it and love to debate about the different topics.

Unfortunately I was unable to be in class today due to a workshop I had to attend. While I was away, students played the role of Doctor and had to diagnose some celebrity patients. The activity was titled CELEBRITY CASE FILES.
Students also received their new set of vocabulary words. You can find these in the vocabulary section of my website and I will also list them below. Vocab notebooks will be due Friday and students will take their vocab quiz Friday as well. Don't forget, we will be having a dance here at HJ on Friday right after school. Today, despite the dreary weather, has been a great day! We started off the day watching a video about how viruses invade the body (see below). Students were also given their new set of vocab words today (see below). These words are due Friday September 4th in the proper format (words, definition, drawing in color) in their vocab notebooks. If they want to improve their grade they need to follow the steps on this REQUEST TO FIX A TEST/QUIZ FORM. They must do this on their own time and turn it in when it is complete. We started the week off with our first unit on Structures and Functions of Living Organisms (8.L.1). Today students were instructed on how to set up their binders and vocab notebooks and were given their first set of vocab words (see below for the list of words). Every Monday students will be given a new set of words and will be required to keep track of them in their notebooks. Each word will be worth 4 points (1 pt for the word, 1pt for the definition, 1pt for a picture, and 1pt for coloring the picture). These words will be due every Friday and we will take a quiz that day on that week's set of vocab words. It is incredibly important for students to keep up with these words because they are essential for learning our science curriculum. I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and restful Spring Break. I know it is always hard to get back into the swing of things, but alas we must. It is all down hill from here as we begin to prepare for the upcoming EOGs! Today we jumped right in to our 3rd section of the Earth Systems Unit (8.E.1.3). Students had to find information on water quality and the properties of water quality. You can find all of the links to today's assignments below. Today in class students received their new set of vocab words (see below). These words will be due on the Monday we come back from Spring Break so make sure you are getting those words done and studying them! We also began working on a couple different reading assignments. The first assignment was on ESTUARIES. Students were required to read and answer the questions at the end of the reading. The second assignment was all about OCEAN ZONES AND MARINE FOOD WEBS. This assignment required students to read and then create 5 of their own questions based on the text. There is a possibility I will use some of these questions on their test at the end of this unit. This picture will also help students understand the ocean zones better. They should know details about the shore, the open ocean, and the deep ocean. Students were required to take down notes as they listened to the video. We also completed a literacy assignment called Watersheds, Aquifers, & Groundwater. Students were required to answer the 7 questions after the reading in COMPLETE sentences on the same page as the notes from the video.
We also received the new set of vocab words (see below for the list). These words will be due on Monday the 30th. Be sure to study because there will be a quiz on these words on the 30th as well!!! I have been so busy I haven't been able to update lately. So let me get you caught up. Monday and Tuesday students had a substitute and they worked on their literacy skills by reading different articles about the current unit and answering questions about their reading as well as writing a summary for each article. Students were also given a new set of vocab words that are due on Monday (see below for these words). Wednesday, we watched the Planet Earth: Jungles video and students had to answer THESE questions (adapted from United Streaming) about the video. This video shows fabulous examples of a real ecosystem and the symbiotic relationships that take place within it as well as competition, coexistence, limiting factors and carrying capacity.
Thursday, we went over the STUDY GUIDE for the benchmark and classroom test. Students were able to ask any questions they had and clear up any misconceptions. Friday, students completed the 6th district benchmark assessment on Ecosystems and Monday they will be completing the classroom test for this unit as well. Keep in mind your vocab is due on Monday. Also, THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN ANY MISSING OR MAKE-UP WORK FOR THIS QUARTER IS MONDAY THE 23rd!!! Have a wonderful weekend, I will see you all Monday. We also worked on several different interactive websites today so students could gain a better understanding of how energy flows in ecosystems. The websites we visited are also below. We will finish our last set of notes on Ecosystems tomorrow and spend the rest of the week exploring the cycling of matter.

We also worked out of the NC Ready workbooks yesterday so if you were absent, see me when you come back. Today we will be filling out a couple graphic organizers on PHOTOSYNTHESIS and CELLULAR RESPIRATION. We will be learning all about cells, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and cell division. Students received their new set of vocab words today (see below for the list). These words will be due on Monday the 9th and they should be studying them because there will be a quiz on these words that day as well.
To start the unit off today, students were required to read THIS article (courtesy of https://sciencewithmsbarton.wordpress.com/) . While reading students were to write down any words they did not know and define them on a separate sheet of paper. Then they were required to answer the questions at the end of the article in their science notebooks. This unit tends to be a difficult one for students to grasp so it is imperative that you are studying at home every night in order to be successful with this unit. Hopefully we can come out on top for our next benchmark! Michigan State had the come back of the year with that blocked field goal! I was on the edge of my seat the entire game! And for those of you Buckeyes out there, congrats on beating Alabama! It was a great day for the Big 10!! Moving on from football, today we started diving deeper into the world of pathogens and disease. Students did a Gallery Walk where they read posters on 4 different kinds of pathogens and filled out a chart that they will eventually glue in their notebooks for a reference guide. These words will be due on Monday, January 12th and we will have a quiz on these words as well that day. See below for the list of words. I am looking forward to the 2nd half of the school year with all of you. Keep in mind, the 2nd nine weeks is ending NEXT WEEK which means if you have any missing or make-up work you want to turn in you need to do that ASAP!! Yesterday, students were given their new set of vocab words. This will be the last set of words for the Evolution and Genetics Unit we are working on. See below for the list of words. They will be due on Monday. This week we are working on finishing up this unit. Today we are taking the last set of notes on Classification. Students will use a fill-in-the-blank graphic organizer to glue in their notebooks that they can take home and study. Looking ahead, we will be taking a classroom TEST next week on this unit as well as the district benchmark. See below for the list of words. Today in class, we kicked off our evolution unit by learning a bit about Darwin and his voyage around the world. I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun Halloween weekend! Who else is on sugar overload??? In science class today, students took their vocab quiz on last week's words and received the last set of vocab words for the Earth History Unit. These words will be due next week on Wednesday (11/12) and we will take a vocab quiz that day as well. We also took notes on the last section of the Earth History Unit on the geologic time scale and the different Eras of time. See below for a link to the entire Earth History Unit Powerpoint. Students were also given an assignment to assign major geological and biological events to the correct Era of time. This cut-and-paste activity is due back in class completed tomorrow. Today students completed an activity called "Who Dunit". This activity helps students understand the concept of relative age and the law of superposition. It starts off with students having to solve a crime scene mystery by looking at different tracks from cars and foot prints. Then it leads into students using the same principles of solving the crime scene mystery and relating that to solving the mystery of dating rocks. See below for the link to this activity. Students also took their vocabulary quiz on the first set of vocab words for this unit. This week's new set of vocab words were also given out, see below for this list. We will be working on dating rocks all week with several different activities planned. More on that later....
Whew! What a whirlwind of a week we had last week. Students finished out the chemistry unit with a test for a grade in my classroom. We also completed the district benchmark assessment for this unit. Today students were able to complete the district Reading benchmark assessment as well. Now that all that testing is complete, we are finally getting started with our new unit on Earth History. Today, students received their new set of vocabulary words (see below for the list). These words are due completed in the proper format by Monday (10/27/14), we will also have a vocab quiz that day. We also were able to refresh our memories of the rock cycle and plate tectonics by watching a video. For homework, students are required to complete a reading assignment with questions on the rock cycle (see below for a copy of this). Tomorrow, students can expect to hit the ground running with our new topic on fossils and relative dating. Have a great day!!!
