Hey, hello, and hi to everyone out there! Today, despite the dreary weather, has been a great day! We started off the day watching a video about how viruses invade the body (see below). Students were also given their new set of vocab words today (see below). These words are due Friday September 4th in the proper format (words, definition, drawing in color) in their vocab notebooks. VOCAB WORDS DUE FRIDAY 9/4 (quiz that day as well) host microbiology microscopic transmit resistant mutate vector replicate immune system Students were also given a reading and writing assignment that had them compare and contrast viruses and bacteria. This assignment is due TOMORROW!! You can find a copy of that HERE. Also, students were given back they graded vocab quizzes from Friday. If they want to improve their grade they need to follow the steps on this REQUEST TO FIX A TEST/QUIZ FORM. They must do this on their own time and turn it in when it is complete. HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!!! Today we watched a Bill Nye episode on Energy. See below for the video. Don't forget your vocab is due on Monday (see post from 4/28/15). Make sure you are studying those words for the quiz. Have a great weekend and I will see you next week! We kicked off class today watching a video called Jay-Z Water for Life which is about rapper Jay-Z's travels to Africa and his help with the global water crisis. We then moved into our stations activities (see below for links to these documents). There were 6 stations that covered the following topics: Station 1: Dissolved Oxygen Station 2: pH levels Station 3: Bio-indicators Station 4: Turbidity Station 5: Temperature Station 6: Discussion questions about Jay-Z Water for Life video Link to Video (you can also find this on YouTube) The following questions should be answered at station 6 in COMPLETE sentences on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to your station paper:
What is your opinion of the video? How did it make you feel? What was something new you learned from watching the video? Imagine your life if you lived in one of those villages Jay-Z toured, how would your life be different? What do YOU think can be done to help the world's water crisis? Links to today's activities: Water Quality Stations Water Quality Stations Student Sheet Today, students were introduced to the Hydrosphere unit with a Discovery Streaming video called "The Endless Voyage: It's in the Water". Students were required to take down notes as they listened to the video. We also completed a literacy assignment called Watersheds, Aquifers, & Groundwater. Students were required to answer the 7 questions after the reading in COMPLETE sentences on the same page as the notes from the video.
We also received the new set of vocab words (see below for the list). These words will be due on Monday the 30th. Be sure to study because there will be a quiz on these words on the 30th as well!!! I have been so busy I haven't been able to update lately. So let me get you caught up. Monday and Tuesday students had a substitute and they worked on their literacy skills by reading different articles about the current unit and answering questions about their reading as well as writing a summary for each article. Students were also given a new set of vocab words that are due on Monday (see below for these words). Wednesday, we watched the Planet Earth: Jungles video and students had to answer THESE questions (adapted from United Streaming) about the video. This video shows fabulous examples of a real ecosystem and the symbiotic relationships that take place within it as well as competition, coexistence, limiting factors and carrying capacity.
Thursday, we went over the STUDY GUIDE for the benchmark and classroom test. Students were able to ask any questions they had and clear up any misconceptions. Friday, students completed the 6th district benchmark assessment on Ecosystems and Monday they will be completing the classroom test for this unit as well. Keep in mind your vocab is due on Monday. Also, THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN ANY MISSING OR MAKE-UP WORK FOR THIS QUARTER IS MONDAY THE 23rd!!! Have a wonderful weekend, I will see you all Monday. I hope you enjoyed your day to sleep in! I know I did! Yesterday was a super busy day so I did not have an opportunity to post. In class we watched a video all about the Spanish Flu pandemic. Today, students are working on reading 6 different infographics (found under my class resources tab). Students are required to read through each infographic and answer questions about each. You can find the questions HERE. Due to shortened class periods we will continue this activity on Friday.

I hope everyone studied and did well this time around! We also began learning about outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics today. Students glued a READING ASSIGNMENT (found on THIS site) into their notebooks and answered the questions right there so they had the information to help them study at home. We also watched the TedEd video below about how Pandemics spread. We also received our new set of vocab words. They will be due next week on Wednesday (1/21) when we return from our short break from school. Today in class students watched 2 videos (courtesy of http://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts.html). The first video was on BACTERIA and the second was on VIRUSES. After each video students were to complete the activity sheet that went along with each video.
