New Bern is getting a new Mayor....well at least for the sake of our project anyways. Today, students were placed into groups of 3 or 4 and were given the task of being campaign managers for different candidates running for Mayor of New Bern. They are tasked with creating a 30 second commercial endorsing their candidate and explaining why the Clean Water Act should or should not be enforced. Students will have the rest of the week to work on this in class. Students will present their commercials to the class on Monday and continue on Tuesday after the benchmark test if necessary.
Click HERE for the full details of the project including how it will be graded. I also passed out a study guide for the benchmark test today. This will also be due on Monday. You can find a copy of the study guide HERE. Looking ahead: Vocab words due and quiz on Monday (4/27) Commercial due Monday (4/27) Study guide due Monday (4/27) Benchmark test for Earth Systems will be on Tuesday (4/28), make sure you are studying. Today, students were required to read a text about point-source and non-point-source pollution. There were 6 questions at the end of the article they were required to answer that included items such as summarizing, citing text, and creating Venn Diagrams. You can find a copy of the article HERE. If students finished they were allowed to work on their vocab.
Tomorrow we start a unit project. Check back for more details. Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! Today, students took their quiz on last week's vocab and received their new words for this week (see below). We also took time today to take our last set of notes for this unit. These notes were all about water pollution and where it comes from. See below for links to the PowerPoint and the student notes. Tomorrow we are getting started on a week long project to finish out this unit. Check in to see what it will be all about!
NOTES: Water Pollution Student Note Sheet NEW VOCAB DUE Monday 4/27/15 Point-source pollution Non-Point-source pollution Water quality Pesticides Herbicides Stewardship Water treatment Clean Water Act Safe Drinking Act Yesterday, students worked out the the NC Ready workbooks. They were required to read 4 chapters and take notes on each chapter then answer the questions at the end of each chapter. Today we are working on finishing up the water quality stations we started on Wednesday. Don't forget to get your vocab done by Monday and study those words for the quiz.
Have a great weekend! I will see you all Monday! We kicked off class today watching a video called Jay-Z Water for Life which is about rapper Jay-Z's travels to Africa and his help with the global water crisis. We then moved into our stations activities (see below for links to these documents). There were 6 stations that covered the following topics: Station 1: Dissolved Oxygen Station 2: pH levels Station 3: Bio-indicators Station 4: Turbidity Station 5: Temperature Station 6: Discussion questions about Jay-Z Water for Life video Link to Video (you can also find this on YouTube) The following questions should be answered at station 6 in COMPLETE sentences on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to your station paper:
What is your opinion of the video? How did it make you feel? What was something new you learned from watching the video? Imagine your life if you lived in one of those villages Jay-Z toured, how would your life be different? What do YOU think can be done to help the world's water crisis? Links to today's activities: Water Quality Stations Water Quality Stations Student Sheet Quick update today everyone! Today, we worked on taking notes on water quality. Students put the graphic organizer in their notebooks to be able to study them at home. You can find the links to the PowerPoint and student notes below.
Don't forget to be working on your vocab words that are due on Monday. You will have a quiz on them! Have a wonderful evening and see you tomorrow! Water Quality PowerPoint Water Quality Student Note Sheet Welcome back everyone! I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and restful Spring Break. I know it is always hard to get back into the swing of things, but alas we must. It is all down hill from here as we begin to prepare for the upcoming EOGs! Today we jumped right in to our 3rd section of the Earth Systems Unit (8.E.1.3). Students had to find information on water quality and the properties of water quality. You can find all of the links to today's assignments below. We also took our vocab quiz on oceans and we received our new vocab on water quality (see below). Enjoy your evening and see you tomorrow!
In order to supplement students' knowledge of oceans, today we started a station activity where students traveled to 8 different stations reading and exploring different interactives. The stations included information about:
1. Deep Ocean Exploration 2. Marine Life Forms 3. Ocean/Marine Food Webs 4. Oceans as a Living Resource 5-8. Zones of the Ocean We will continue these stations tomorrow and then we will be off for SPRING BREAK!! You can find links to all the materials for today and tomorrow's activity below. Have a WONDERFUL and RESTFUL Spring Break and I will see you back here on the 13th! Info for Stations 1-4 Link Used for Station 3 Infographic for Station 4 (also see below) Info for Stations 5-8 Student Booklet for Station Activity (All files courtesy of https://sciencewithmsbarton.wordpress.com/) ****Click picture to make it bigger.**** Today students took notes on 8.E.1.2. This part of the unit explores the oceans, marine ecosystems, and estuaries. We used this POWERPOINT to take notes on this GRAPHIC ORGANIZER. Students glued these notes into their notebooks so they can study them at home.
Remember to stay ahead of your new vocab words. If you get them done this week you won't have anything to do over the break for science class! Take a look at the diagrams below to learn more about what today's lesson was on. Today in class students received their new set of vocab words (see below). These words will be due on the Monday we come back from Spring Break so make sure you are getting those words done and studying them! We also began working on a couple different reading assignments. The first assignment was on ESTUARIES. Students were required to read and answer the questions at the end of the reading. The second assignment was all about OCEAN ZONES AND MARINE FOOD WEBS. This assignment required students to read and then create 5 of their own questions based on the text. There is a possibility I will use some of these questions on their test at the end of this unit. This picture will also help students understand the ocean zones better. They should know details about the shore, the open ocean, and the deep ocean. Have a great evening and don't forget about that vocab!!
VOCAB DUE 4/13/15 Estuaries Marine ecosystems Upwelling Photosynthesis Chemosynthesis Hydrothermal vent Salinity Nekton Benthos Plankton Today, students completed a lab on the properties of water. They traveled to different stations doing activities that involved a different property of water. You can find a copy of the student lab book HERE (you will need Microsoft Publisher to open). Next week we will move on in the unit and begin talking about oceans!
Have a great weekend and don't forget your vocab words are due on Monday! Make sure you study for that quiz! Today, students took these NOTES (click to download student notes for notebooks) on the distribution of water. We used this PREZI to take notes from that has some great videos built in that gave us a closer look at the hydrosphere right here in North Carolina! I think students began to have that "eye opening" experience when it came to our water resources and how they need to be protected.
Tomorrow we will be working on a lab about water properties. Have a great evening!! Today students worked on putting together their own "notes study guide". This resource will be a great way to study for the benchmark and EOG for this unit. You can find the passages used HERE.
The following worksheets were used to go along with the passage: Water on Earth Surface Water Wetland Environments Water Underground Students were expected to complete the assignment using the passage and turn it in for a grade. It will be returned at a later date and put into their notebooks to be used to study. Today, students were introduced to the Hydrosphere unit with a Discovery Streaming video called "The Endless Voyage: It's in the Water". Students were required to take down notes as they listened to the video. We also completed a literacy assignment called Watersheds, Aquifers, & Groundwater. Students were required to answer the 7 questions after the reading in COMPLETE sentences on the same page as the notes from the video.
We also received the new set of vocab words (see below for the list). These words will be due on Monday the 30th. Be sure to study because there will be a quiz on these words on the 30th as well!!!
