Hey there science people! I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun Halloween weekend! Who else is on sugar overload??? In science class today, students took their vocab quiz on last week's words and received the last set of vocab words for the Earth History Unit. These words will be due next week on Wednesday (11/12) and we will take a vocab quiz that day as well. We also took notes on the last section of the Earth History Unit on the geologic time scale and the different Eras of time. See below for a link to the entire Earth History Unit Powerpoint. Students were also given an assignment to assign major geological and biological events to the correct Era of time. This cut-and-paste activity is due back in class completed tomorrow. Today students completed an activity called "Who Dunit". This activity helps students understand the concept of relative age and the law of superposition. It starts off with students having to solve a crime scene mystery by looking at different tracks from cars and foot prints. Then it leads into students using the same principles of solving the crime scene mystery and relating that to solving the mystery of dating rocks. See below for the link to this activity. Students also took their vocabulary quiz on the first set of vocab words for this unit. This week's new set of vocab words were also given out, see below for this list. We will be working on dating rocks all week with several different activities planned. More on that later....
Hello everyone! This week we have hit the ground running with our Earth History Unit. The past couple of days in class we have spent time taking notes on fossils, relative age, absolute age, and dating rocks and fossils. Today we started working on a stations activity where students will read about different ways to date rocks and fossils and answer some questions about each reading at the station. At their tables, students were given time to read quietly and then participate in a Round Robin style conversation about how to answer the questions. Students were directed to come up with an agreed upon consensus of what the answer to each question was and write that on their paper. All of my students did a fabulous job with that activity and I am looking forward to finishing that up tomorrow in class. Students finished out the chemistry unit with a test for a grade in my classroom. We also completed the district benchmark assessment for this unit. Today students were able to complete the district Reading benchmark assessment as well. Now that all that testing is complete, we are finally getting started with our new unit on Earth History. Today, students received their new set of vocabulary words (see below for the list). These words are due completed in the proper format by Monday (10/27/14), we will also have a vocab quiz that day. We also were able to refresh our memories of the rock cycle and plate tectonics by watching a video. For homework, students are required to complete a reading assignment with questions on the rock cycle (see below for a copy of this). Tomorrow, students can expect to hit the ground running with our new topic on fossils and relative dating. Have a great day!!!
