Hello everyone out there! Today has been a great day in science class. Students were able to participate in 7 different stations that helped them to review different separation techniques for mixtures. We learned about magnetic separation, density separation, mechanical separation, sifting, boiling, and chromatography. I was happy to see all the hard work the kids did today. Check out some pictures from today!
See you tomorrow!

Happy Thursday everyone! Who's cold today? I know I am!
Today starts our first Chemistry Thursday! Myself and the other 8th grade science teachers have decided to make every Thursday a chemistry review day so that the topic stays fresh in our minds for the rest of the year. We kicked it off today with a lab on elements compounds and mixtures. You can find a copy of this lab HERE. Students were required to travel to different stations and identify the substance as either an element, compound, or mixture. They did a great job with this assignment and I am looking forward to more Chem Thursdays!! Just a reminder, your vocab words are due on Monday and we will be taking a quiz over those words Monday as well. Make sure you are studying! Have a wonderful day everyone! See you tomorrow! Today, students did an AWESOME job rotating through 6 different lab stations that demonstrated physical properties and changes. The 6 different stations were the following:
Station 1: It's Just Paper Station 2: Can Crush Station 3: Sink or Float? Station 4: Mystery Objects Station 5: Water Can Bend? Station 6: M&M's Magic Before the lab started students worked on Pre-Lab questions that we went over together before the lab started. For homework tonight, students should be working on the Review & recap worksheet. This is due tomorrow. See below for a copy of this paper. Be sure to check out the pictures of my fantastic scientists in action! Tonight's Homework: Review & Recap of Physical Properties & Change Greetings everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the fall-like temperatures we have been having! Yesterday students received their last set of vocabulary words for our chemistry unit. See below for this list of words; they are due Monday in the correct format in their vocab notebooks. Today, we began discussing physical & chemical properties & change. We took some notes using a fill-in-the-blank graphic organizer and then we focused on literacy with a reading on physical properties and change. Students will be required to complete the questions for this reading for homework this evening. See below for a copy of this reading assignment as well as today's PPT. Happy Tuesday!!
Hey there everyone! Today was an awesome-ly fantastic day in science! We learned about acids, bases, and the pH scale. We started the day off with taking some notes in our interactive notebook. See below for the link to the powerpoint and the fill in the blank notes for your notebooks. Afterwards, we moved on to our pH lab where my students were able to test 3 different mystery solutions with red and blue litmus paper to see if they were an acid, base or neutral solution. I have to say, all of my classes did a great job with this investigation and I think they had a great time doing it too! I have also put a link below of the lab report. Checkout the pictures to see my students in action!
Students also received their Periodic Table/Element, Compound, Mixture TEST back today. Don't forget, if you want to make a better grade on the test be sure to pick up a copy of the "Request to Fix a Test" paper in my classroom. Fill it out, follow the directions and return it to me to get extra credit on the test. Need a copy, click the link below. REMINDER: Tonight is HJM's spaghetti dinner OPEN HOUSE! Please come on out and see your teachers! Have a great day everyone! Tomorrow is FRIDAY!!! LINKS: Acid/Base Powerpoint Acid/Base fill in notes pH Lab Report Request to Fix a Test Paper Hello to all my wonderful scientists! Today students reviewed for our test tomorrow. We played Quiz-Quiz-Trade, a game where each student gets a card with a question on it and has to get with a partner and answer each others questions. After, they trade cards and find a new partner. Students also received a study guide and had the opportunity to work on this in class but will have to be finished for homework this evening to help them study. See below for a copy of that study guide.
Be sure to get in some good studying time tonight with your notes and vocab, and get plenty of rest so you are wide awake and on you A-game tomorrow for our test on the Periodic Table and Elements, Compounds, & Mixtures!!! Have a great night and good luck studying!! PTE and Elements, Compounds, & Mixtures Study Guide Phew! What a week! Is it just me or has time flown by super fast? This week has been all about the periodic table of elements. Today students worked on a PTE scavenger hunt and will continue this assignment tomorrow in class. For homework this evening, students will complete a paper called "Who Am I". It is a paper that gives clue about a specific element and using the PTE, students will identify which element it is. This assignment is due back in class tomorrow (9/19/14). See below if you need an extra copy of this assignment.
On top of all that, all core teachers sent home progress reports today. Please make sure these get signed by a parent or guardian and turned in tomorrow morning. Don't forget tomorrow is a half day for students. School is dismissed at 12:30pm. I hope you all enjoy your extra weekend time! NOTE!! You will have a TEST on elements, compounds, mixtures, and the periodic table next week on TUESDAY (9/23/14) PTE Scavenger Hunt (source: http://sciencewithmsbarton.wordpress.com/) "Who Am I?" PTE practice After me being absent for a few days we are finally back into the swing of things! I always hate being out but sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do. Yesterday, students took their vocabulary quiz on atoms, elements, compounds, and mixtures. They also received their new set of vocabulary words for this week. See below for the words and details for the next quiz. Today, we dove right in to the Periodic Table of Elements (PTE). We took some notes, colored the PTE, and for homework students will be required to do some reading and answer questions. Need any of these resources? See below for the links. We will be working with the PTE for the rest of this week and part of next and then moving on to chemical and physical properties of matter. I am looking forward to seeing how well my students do with this subject! Stay tuned for information on an upcoming test on what we have learned so far! Have a great day!!!
Greetings Scientists!
Yesterday, students turned in their first set of vocabulary words. I was truly impressed with some of the work students put in to complete these words. You all did a great job! We also took our first vocab quiz on Monday, stay tuned for your results in class. Monday was a busy day because we also received a new set of vocabulary words for the first part of the Matter Unit. Below you will find a list of the words you will need to have completed by next week Tuesday, September 16th. Homework note: students should complete the Atom reading and questions. Need another copy? Click Here Thank you all for being such a great group of students. I am so fortunate to be working with each and every one of you every day. ~Mrs. Kievit NEW VOCAB WORDS Due 9/16/14 - quiz that day also atom molecule proton homogeneous mixture electron heterogeneous mixture neutron atomic number element atomic mass compound mixture WOW! What a fantastic day we had in Science class today! Students began to realize just how difficult Scientists have it when it comes to writing out the steps to their experiments. Today, students worked in groups on a lab titled "Can you Write a Clear and Concise Lab Procedure". In groups, students used a set of materials to build a unique object. They were required to write out the exact steps it took to build that object. Once complete, each group traded procedures with another group to see if the other group could build the same exact object based off the procedures that were written. The lab worked out really great and students quickly realized that maybe they didn't write the most precise directions after all! Afterwards, students were asked to reflect and do an analysis of what happened and what they could have done differently when it came to writing the steps down. I am so proud of my students for working so hard on this activity! You all did a FABULOUS job!
Need a copy of the lab report? CLICK HERE Check out the great work we did today! Students received their first set of vocabulary words this week. We are currently working on the Scientific Method unit. Students have been directed to put each vocab word into the Frayer model format (word, definition, picture in color, facts/characteristics/examples, and non-examples). An example has been stapled into the cover of their vocabulary notebooks. Check out the picture below for an idea of what the Frayer Model is and how to draw it on your paper. There should be 2 words per page. NOTE: There will be a vocabulary quiz on these words on MONDAY!
