Quick update here.
Yesterday and today, students worked on completing an assignment that required them to read through several different infographics and answer questions about different epidemics and pandemics that have occurred throughout history. You can find the links to the infographics and the questions for this activity HERE. Students also took their third vocab quiz today. Overall they all did pretty great! I hope everyone has a wonderful and restful weekend. See you on Monday.

Welcome back everyone! I hope you enjoyed your long weekend, even if it wasn't the greatest weekend weather-wise. Unfortunately I was unable to be in class today due to a workshop I had to attend. While I was away, students played the role of Doctor and had to diagnose some celebrity patients. The activity was titled CELEBRITY CASE FILES.
Students also received their new set of vocabulary words. You can find these in the vocabulary section of my website and I will also list them below. Vocab notebooks will be due Friday and students will take their vocab quiz Friday as well. Don't forget, we will be having a dance here at HJ on Friday right after school. Admission is $5 and concessions will be sold. Be sure to come on out and have a great time with all of your friends! Have a great evening and I will be back at school tomorrow! VOCAB WORDS DUE 9/11/15 pandemic epidemic outbreak exposed infectious contagious quarantine non-infectious Who's excited for the upcoming long weekend? I hope you all enjoy and have a fun and safe holiday weekend!
Finishing up the week, students took their second vocab quiz and did very well. After the quiz we worked independantly on a literacy assignment. Students were required to read about OUTBREAKS, EPIDEMICS, and PANDEMICS. While reading, they were required to fill out a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER to keep their thoughts straight and to also create a great study tool. After they completed the reading they were expected to answer 6 text based questions on a separate sheet of paper. This will be turned in for a grade. If students did not finish they are expected to complete the assignment over the weekend. Again, I hope you all enjoy the long weekend. I will see you back here on Tuesday. Half way through the week everyone! YAY!
Yesterday was kind of a brutal day. We worked really hard to claim each student's online account. We had to work through computer issues, internet issues, tying issues...I could go on and on but we made it through and now we are all able to access the internet!! Today, students are going to get the opportunity to solve a mystery. They will be required to use their math skills, deductive reasoning skills, and team player skills while they play the role of disease detective and find out exactly which school lunch food gave students food poisoning (no worries, this didn't actually happen, it is purely fictional!). Students will be using this DISEASE DETECTIVE activity to complete this assignment with a partner. REMINDER: Vocabulary is due on Friday. I will post the definitions on Thursday HERE so that you can check to see if yours match mine. Hey, hello, and hi to everyone out there! Today, despite the dreary weather, has been a great day! We started off the day watching a video about how viruses invade the body (see below). Students were also given their new set of vocab words today (see below). These words are due Friday September 4th in the proper format (words, definition, drawing in color) in their vocab notebooks. VOCAB WORDS DUE FRIDAY 9/4 (quiz that day as well) host microbiology microscopic transmit resistant mutate vector replicate immune system Students were also given a reading and writing assignment that had them compare and contrast viruses and bacteria. This assignment is due TOMORROW!! You can find a copy of that HERE. Also, students were given back they graded vocab quizzes from Friday. If they want to improve their grade they need to follow the steps on this REQUEST TO FIX A TEST/QUIZ FORM. They must do this on their own time and turn it in when it is complete. Students will receive half a point for each correction made. I hope you all had a great Monday. Feel free to contact me with any questions! Hey there everyone! We have successfully made it half way through the first week of school! I am excited to see where this year leads us.
On this rainy Wednesday, students started taking their first set of notes. They were required to fill in a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER while listening to a PowerPoint Presentation about Pathogens and Disease. We didn't finish the entire presentation today so we will pick up where we left off tomorrow. DON'T FORGET: Your vocab is due FRIDAY!! You have a quiz on that set of words FRIDAY as well! See yesterday's post for directions on how to set up your notebook and for the list of words you need. Have a wonderful evening. See you bright and early! Well we have made it through the first 2 days of school and everything has gone incredibly well! What an amazing group of students we have this year. I can already tell that this year is going to be exceptional!
We started the week off with our first unit on Structures and Functions of Living Organisms (8.L.1). Today students were instructed on how to set up their binders and vocab notebooks and were given their first set of vocab words (see below for the list of words). Every Monday students will be given a new set of words and will be required to keep track of them in their notebooks. Each word will be worth 4 points (1 pt for the word, 1pt for the definition, 1pt for a picture, and 1pt for coloring the picture). These words will be due every Friday and we will take a quiz that day on that week's set of vocab words. It is incredibly important for students to keep up with these words because they are essential for learning our science curriculum. THIS WEEK"S WORDS (DUE FRIDAY 8/28) virus protozoa parasite pathogen fungi bacteria antibiotic vaccine antiviral We also were able to complete a fun activity that demonstrates how diseases are spread throughout populations. The students had fun and they even got to have treat when they were done. Interested in knowing exactly what they did? Click on the link below to view their assignment. DISEASE TRANSMISSION CANDY SIMULATION Hopefully you have had a great first couple days like I have. Enjoy your evening and I will see you tomorrow. Happy Hump day everyone! We are getting close to wrapping up the Structures & Functions of Living Organisms unit this week. Today students finished watching Osmosis Jones (a really great movie that uniquely portrays our pathogens & disease portion of this unit well). Tonight students need to complete their study guide because tomorrow we will be going over all of the questions and I will answer any lingering questions students have in order to prepare for our benchmark assessment which will be Friday. Make sure you are studying and preparing for this benchmark at home tonight and tomorrow night. Come to class prepared to ACE this benchmark! I know you will all do great!
Looking ahead, next week we will get a new set of vocab words and start diving into the wonderful world of Molecular Biology. Get ready to learn all about cells, mitosis and meiosis, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and healthy living! I will be back next week with another update. Until then, happy studying! Today we began watching one of my all time favorite movies, Osmosis Jones! Some of my students were able to watch this movie last year in 7th grade, but this year instead of looking at it from a human body perspective, we are watching it from a pathogens and disease perspective. Students will be filling out THIS form while watching the movie. We will be using today and tomorrow's class to complete this movie.
Students were also given their BENCHMARK STUDY GUIDE today to complete for homework. This will be due on Thursday and we will be going over all of the questions so students are sure to have a good idea of what their benchmark will look like. Happy studying!! Today students turned in their vocab notebooks to be checked as well as took a quiz on the previous set of vocab words. We then worked on finishing our PSA poster project that we started on Friday all about GMO's. These projects will count as a TEST grade and they are due tomorrow! Be sure to finish these up tonight and bring them back. See Friday's post with more information about this project as well as the rubric for how I will be grading it.
Looking ahead, you should be preparing yourself for the next benchmark test on Friday. It will cover all of the Pathogens and Disease Unit as well as the Biotechnology Unit. Make sure you are studying all those vocab words and all of your notes in your notebooks. TGIF everyone! Today students worked on finishing up the infographic assignment we started on Wednesday. When students finished they were able to use three different interactive websites that went along perfectly with this unit (see below for the websites we used).
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend! See you back here on Wednesday! Interactive Websites: Epidemic Game Pathogen Tracker Game Disease Detective Happy Wednesday to all! I hope you enjoyed your day to sleep in! I know I did! Yesterday was a super busy day so I did not have an opportunity to post. In class we watched a video all about the Spanish Flu pandemic. Today, students are working on reading 6 different infographics (found under my class resources tab). Students are required to read through each infographic and answer questions about each. You can find the questions HERE. Due to shortened class periods we will continue this activity on Friday.
Tomorrow is CHEMISTRY THURSDAY!! See you then! Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Today students turned in their vocab words and took their quiz. I hope everyone studied and did well this time around! We also began learning about outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics today. Students glued a READING ASSIGNMENT (found on THIS site) into their notebooks and answered the questions right there so they had the information to help them study at home. We also watched the TedEd video below about how Pandemics spread. We also received our new set of vocab words. They will be due next week on Wednesday (1/21) when we return from our short break from school. VOCAB WORDS Contagion Pandemic Epidemic Outbreak Infectious Contagious Algae Host cell Quarentine Immune system Happy Friday everyone! We have finally made it to the end of the week and what a great week it has been! Today students played of the role of doctor. They were given 6 "Celebrity Case Files" and were tasked to identify the disease the celebrity had contracted. Click HERE for a copy of the assignment. They seemed to enjoy it and it helped them learn about several different diseases and what their symptoms are. Don't forget, if you didn't finish this will be due Monday.
REMINDERS: Vocab due MONDAY AL MAKE UP WORK AND EXTRA CREDIT DUE MONDAY!!! Extra Credit: 5 points for every box of tissue donated to the class, max 100 points Have a great and restful weekend! See you back here Monday! Hey Hey Hey everyone! I hope you are all bracing yourselves for this deep freeze we are getting tonight! I think I might have to curl up under a blanket with some hot chocolate when I get home tonight!
Today in class students watched 2 videos (courtesy of http://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts.html). The first video was on BACTERIA and the second was on VIRUSES. After each video students were to complete the activity sheet that went along with each video. Click the following links to get the handouts: BACTERIA HANDOUT VIRUS HANDOUT If students finished early they were given the opportunity to work on their vocabulary words that are due on Monday, January 12th. Today students received notes on pathogens and disease. We looked at a PowerPoint (adapted from a file found at missj12biol.wikispaces.com) presentation and students filled in NOTES that go in their notebooks. Use these notes to help you study.
Students also were given an assignment that had them look at data from different flu pandemics and answer questions about it and draw a graph from the data. You can find that paper HERE (courtesy of http://sciencewithmsbarton.wordpress.com/). REMINDER: Progress reports went home today. Please make sure to get them signed and brought back tomorrow! Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful break. I went up to visit my family in Michigan and this was the first trip in 7 years that there was no snow! Oh and how about those SPARTANS?? Did anyone see that awesome football game? Michigan State had the come back of the year with that blocked field goal! I was on the edge of my seat the entire game! And for those of you Buckeyes out there, congrats on beating Alabama! It was a great day for the Big 10!! Moving on from football, today we started diving deeper into the world of pathogens and disease. Students did a Gallery Walk where they read posters on 4 different kinds of pathogens and filled out a chart that they will eventually glue in their notebooks for a reference guide. See below for the links to these items if you were absent. We also received our new set of vocabulary words today. These words will be due on Monday, January 12th and we will have a quiz on these words as well that day. See below for the list of words. I am looking forward to the 2nd half of the school year with all of you. Keep in mind, the 2nd nine weeks is ending NEXT WEEK which means if you have any missing or make-up work you want to turn in you need to do that ASAP!! ALSO, don't forget you can fix any test or quiz for a better grade. Just fill out THIS form, correct your test or quiz, staple them together and turn it in.
Well folks, this is it! The last post of 2014!! It's crazy how time flies! Yesterday and today students got to act as an Epidemiologist and be a disease detective. You can find the activity HERE. They worked really hard on this assignment and seemed to really enjoy it. I had several students ask if we could do more activities like that. Tomorrow we will get to enjoy a great performance from our ARTS classes.
When we get back from the holiday break we will dive even deeper into our unit on pathogens and diseases and we will have a whole new set of vocab words to practice. For now though, I hope you all get plenty of rest over the break and enjoy the time off with your family and friends. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Be safe and enjoy! See you in 2015!!!!! Happy Tuesday!! Today students are going to explore the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Students will be required to use different resources to complete a Venn Diagram in their interactive notebooks comparing the similarities and differences between the two. We will also watch a video that helps explain the differences. Click HERE for that video.
Once students are completed with the Venn Diagram we will create one as a class using information they found from their research. For homework students will complete THIS worksheet on fungi from k12reader.com. Have a great Tuesday everyone! Only 2.5 days of school left in 2014!! Happy Monday everyone! Only one week left until the Holiday break!! This week we are starting our new unit on pathogens and disease. This topic can be very interesting to teach and learn about! I am really excited to start digging in to all of the material!
Today, students will be working on an independent reading assignment about viruses vs. bacteria while filling out a chart about their reading. See below for links to these files. We will also be watching the following VIDEO CLIP. I hope you all have a fabulous Monday! Check back this week for more posts about the assignments we are doing in class. NOTE: There will be no vocabulary words this week due to the upcoming break. We will begin with new vocab Monday, January 5th.
